From traffic data to mobility manager

This is the story of NDW. About how we came to be, who we are now, and what we are working towards. As NDW, we lay the foundation for mobility data in the Netherlands.

From the past to the present

Ever since the time of horse-drawn carts, road managers have needed information: how busy is it, how safe is it, and how do you keep the environment livable? With increasing mobility, that question became increasingly complex. After the war, car usage increased rapidly, and solutions were sought in more asphalt. Later, the focus shifted towards smarter use of existing roads, supported by increasingly better technology. This increased the demand for reliable and up-to-date data.

The establishment of NDW

In 2007, NDW was founded: a collaboration between government agencies, intended to collect, manage, and share traffic data on a national scale. By working together on quality and standardisation, governments retain control over their data, and better solutions are created for traffic issues.

More than just traffic

Traffic data proved valuable for more than just traffic management. Everyone benefits from reliable information, from service providers to policymakers. NDW developed into the central hub in a data chain, where public and private parties collaborate on safer, cleaner, and smarter traffic. With the National Road Database, NDW offers a reliable, digital representation of the road network, including current traffic regulations. This data is not only used by service providers, but also by road managers themselves.

From traffic to mobility

Mobility in the Netherlands is becoming increasingly complex. More and more travellers are choosing a mix of car, bicycle, public transport, and shared mobility, which requires up-to-date data and smart digital solutions. In 2022, the National Access Point for Mobility Data (NTM) was established and housed at NDW. Together with governments, knowledge institutions, and market parties, NDW is working on solutions to keep the Netherlands accessible, safe, and sustainable. We make mobility data reliable, accessible, and usable, so it truly benefits travellers.

Beyond Mobility

Mobility plays a role in larger societal issues such as climate, living space, and health. NDW helps governments collaborate and speak the same 'language'. We do this by developing, using, and sharing data language. With our knowledge, tools, and services, we contribute to a sustainable, smart, and connected society.
