Road traffic data is more than data about traffic jams and delays. From local speeds to vehicle categories, from traffic intensities to bridge openings - we have them all.
Road authorities and service providers use the data to inform and advise road users before and during the journey via roadside signs and systems, navigation systems, navigation apps and via radio. Of the current traffic data a history is built up. This historical data is used for traffic analysis and research.
Current traffic data
Our current traffic data provides an overview of the current road situation. The main ones are:
- Traffic intensity: the number of vehicles passing a measuring point.
- Local speed: average speed of vehicles passing a measuring point.
- Realized or estimated travel time.
- Vehicle category, derived from the length of the passing vehicles.
Situational data
The so-called situation data say something about the availability (condition) of the road. In our database we have at least included the following situation data:
- Road works and temporary traffic measures at events. This information is available for all roads in the Netherlands.
- Traffic reports, available for national roads.
- Safety related messages, such as Temporary slippery road surface, Person / obstacle on the road, Unsecured accident location, Reduced visibility, Ghost driver and so on. This information is available for all roads in the Netherlands.
- Bridge openings of over 300 bridges in the Netherlands. A signal arrives at the NDW database via measuring equipment as soon as the bridge opens or closes.
- Status (open or closed) of rush-hour lanes, plus lanes, and regular lanes.
Open data or Data + Services
In principle, all the above data is freely available as open data, both in real-time and "historical". If desired, external parties can purchase additional services by entering into a Data + Services agreement.
